Civil Beat triumphs as Society of Professional Journalists announce 2012 awards

The Society of Professional Journalists posted a complete list of 2012 winners of its Excellence in Journalism Award. The awards were presented at their annual dinner on June 29, 2012.
The clear standout was Civil Beat, winning in numerous award categories, and demonstrating that a commitment of professionalism, experience, dedication and yes, money, can produce a product of quality for the reading public.
Searching in the downloaded award file produces hit after hit for Civil Beat. The sheer number of awards captured by Civil Beat this year is a tribute to the leadership of former editor John Temple, who recently accepted an assignment as a managing editor at the Washington Post.
I hope champagne corks popped over in Kaimuki and wherever John calls home this holiday weekend.
The Hawaii Reporter won eight awards (here is their writeup). In particular, the SPJ awards recognized the importance of the investigation into the plight of Thai and Laotian workers in Hawaii. Editor Malia Zimmerman has been and remains the only journalist to follow this story as it continues to unfold. Disappeared News has re-posted several of Malia’s stories, but the silence from the mainstream media has been shocking.
Hawaii Reporter has become a multi-media operation, with radio, TV and YouTube products in addition to the website. A video report won an award.
I’d like to note the complete sweep of the student category (First prize and two Finalist awards) by Janel Lubanski. From her LinkedIn profile it appears that it’s too late for a Hawaii Publication to snap her up, she’s currently working for a media relations firm in Oregon.
Whither the Star-Advertiser? They did win a feature photography award and a feature page design award. Enough said.
