Join the cause—stop Senate filibusters
by Larry Geller
Bob Edgar, president and CEO of Common Cause, is calling for action to end the Senate filibuster. Here’s his message. The link at the end will take you to an action page.
The Senate showdown over the filibuster rules could take place on Monday, January 24. That means we have just a little more than a week to make sure all our Senators understand how crucial this issue is.
The rules that govern the Senate no longer work. Last year, dozens of measures were blocked from coming up for a vote -- and in many cases, from even coming up for debate -- because of abuse of the filibuster rules.
Fortunately, Senator Tom Udall has proposed a solution. Senate Resolution 10 would end filibusters on motions to begin debate, put a stop to secret holds, and would force Senators waging a filibuster to actually stay on the floor and engage in debate. (The current rules allow Senators to block any discussion of legislation they don't like simply by threatening to filibuster.)
Tell your Senators to vote for filibuster reform (S. Res. 10) on January 24!
