Hawaii Board of Education passes A+ fee increases
by Larry Geller
A parent attending the Hawaii Board of Education meeting on Kauai Thursday night reports that the BOE has voted to raise the fee that parents pay to enroll their children in the Department of Education’s after-school program.
The new fees will be $80 for the first child, $75 for the second, and $70 for each child after that. The new fees represent a significant increase from the current $55, $50 and $45 fees.
The Department of Education had claimed that raising the fees was the only way to keep the program solvent.
Many families, devastated by the economy, will have a hard time raising the additional fees.
