Magistrate Judge Barry M. Kurren set a trial date of July 26, 2011 at 09:00 for the start of the trial of the two Aloun Farms Sou brothers in their re-opened human trafficking case.

The date was set to accommodate the schedules of Department of Justice trial attorney Susan French and a new defense attorney  (co-council), not yet registered to practice in Hawaii, California attorney Thomas H. Bienert. The trial date allows French sufficient time to deal with likely language issues in working with non-English speaking witnesses.

Press attendance at the hearings has been sparse. Disappeared News noticed that the regulars are KITV’s Daryl Huff and Hawaii Reporter editor Malia Zimmerman. Although I don’t usually link to Hawaii Reporter, Malia has certainly written the best story so far on this case.

Perhaps, though, press coverage will increase when the trial starts. Reporters may want to note that the new defense co-council Thomas H. Bienert, Jr., is not just any attorney, he has been described by the Los Angeles Times in a 1996 article as “the Perry Mason of Prosecution.”

I’ll have to admit that when I read the comparison of Mr. Bienert to Perry Mason, the theme from the popular TV series immediately played in my head. For those of you who were not around then and might never have seen the re-runs, this link not only carries the theme song but introduces the principle characters in the program. Perry Mason is indelibly inscribed in my mind as played by Raymond Burr. It will be interesting to see if Thomas Bienert can replace that image.

I do expect that when the trial begins, it will be covered by more of our mainstream media. For sure, the rest of the world will be watching.
