New York Times gets a little religion on Israel

by Larry Geller

Maybe they’re coming around to realizing that everything Israel does is not automatically right. This article is somewhat critical of the illegal settlements.

A snip:

HaYovel is one of many groups in the United States using tax-exempt donations to help Jews establish permanence in the Israeli-occupied territories — effectively obstructing the creation of a Palestinian state, widely seen as a necessary condition for Middle East peace.

The result is a surprising juxtaposition: As the American government seeks to end the four-decade Jewish settlement enterprise and foster a Palestinian state in the West Bank, the American Treasury helps sustain the settlements through tax breaks on donations to support them.    [New York Times, Tax-Exempt Funds Aid Settlements in West Bank, 7/5/2010]

Kinda lukewarm, but later the article does at least mention illegal settlements, never quite admitting that they’re all illegal. Still, a small step…

Comments:

Israel's spin on their attack on the aid ship and killing of nine civilians fails the test of believability once you realize that Col (Ret) Ann Wright was part of the flotilla. See http://www.voicesofconscience.com/ for her book. She is the diplomat who resigned when Bush invaded Iraq in order to stand up against his action.

Yes, she had a great interview on Democracy Now shortly after she was released.
