Starbucks to break WSJ paywall—read free without registration

by Larry Geller

See: Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi at All Stores Nationwide (Mashable, 6/14/2010).

Starting July 1, WiFi access at Starbucks locations is to be entirely free, and without registration. That means, of course, that along with a cup of your favorite brew, you can read the on-line editions of newspapers for free.

The article reports also that later this year the Wall Street Journal and other paid content will be accessible for free. The article indicates that as a promotion, the WSJ hopes you will subscribe at home. Meanwhile, if you visit Starbucks, you have access to the content previously blocked by their paywall, without the need to subscribe.

It’s a win-win idea for both Starbucks and the WSJ, but also for readers, of course.

Comments:

Misleading headline. Not "breaking" the paywall if it's part of a promotion.

There is no indication so far that free access is planned to end.... but ok, I could have chosen a different headline.

Requiring those Captcha codes at least temporarily, in the hopes that it quells the flood of comment spam I've been receiving.
