Transparency amendment adopted by Hawaii Senate
by Larry Geller
Many states are taking action to deal with the US Supreme Court’s unleashing of corporate money in the election process. One issue in Hawaii, following one of our own Supreme Court cases, is transparency. In other words, how do we know which corporations are giving how much?
Here’s a floor amendment that passed the Hawaii Senate today, adding a transparency requirement. Corporations must report contributions to a candidate or candidate committee.
Transparency has been a big issue fought for by Common Cause Hawaii and other advocates this session.
At least, we’ll know who has bought whom, if this amendment survives and becomes law.
