Michael Pollan caught in a contradiction

by Larry Geller

Another idol comes crashing down. I have learned that Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals and now making the talk show rounds to push the paperback edition of In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, is not perfect.

Ok, Michael, which is it? Last night on the Colbert Report you said, "Our bodies don't know what to do with high fructose corn syrup."

Then this morning, you told Amy Goodman on Democracy Now, "Biologically, there’s no difference between high-fructose corn syrup and sugar."

So which is it? Our bodies know what to do with sugar. Please make up your mind. I need to know what to believe.

I don't know whom I can trust anymore. Bush lied, Obama flip-flops, and now you.

I eat my broccoli because you told me to. I swore off Twinkies, a major life adjustment. You have no idea what Twinkie withdrawal is like.

Everything you wrote or said on TV interviews has been like Gospel to me.

And now this.

Look, I put all my faith in Obama's campaign promises. I wanted to believe. He was wholesome, like organic orange juice. Something, somebody, so correct and pure. Not from concentrate, no artificial flavors.

But now... he just said he's actually not going to release those torture photos. He's going to extend the war in Iraq, and he is continuing the Bush regime national secrecy rules. He won't give up extraordinary renditions.

Obama may disappoint, but Michael, I thought I could count on you.

I hear the siren song in the distance... a Twinkie is calling to me in the distance... so soft... its enchanting song calling, calling, "forget that broccoli, come to me, over here in the 7-Eleven, so close, so cheap, so beautifully wrapped, over here..., nothing natural, just melts in your mouth, a cool, creamy texture, enjoy, it's ok ... its calling, calling, I must go now... must go...
