“Complete streets” bill passes into law
by Larry Geller
Robin Brandt announced via email that Act 054 has become law. This may bring about some badly needed changes that would make Hawaii more of the pedestrian paradise it is supposed to be:
SB718 SD1 HD1
RELATING TO TRANSPORTATION.
Complete Streets; Roads and Highways
Requires the department of transportation and the county transportation departments to seek to reasonably accommodate access and mobility for all users of public highways, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, motorists, and persons of all abilities.
Establishes a temporary task force to review certain highway design standards and guidelines. Report to legislature in 2010 and 2011.
Well, passing laws is a good first step. Let’s see how this goes.
