Testing whether barf can be predicted

by Larry Geller

The Superferry pushed up its schedule to Monday for its first trip after leaving drydock.

What might passengers expect with regard to sea sickness? It depends on the individual, of course. The ocean isn't flat just because winter is over.

Here's the current Barf-O-Meter forecast. This is an experimental calculation which would apply to any "large capacity interisland ferry" on this route (Kaiwi and Pailolo channels). Tomorrow there will be one more chance to test the index.Mondaybarf

So "Barf Threat Level 3 (Orange)" means something like that anyone who is queasy might have a more interesting ride than most. We'll have to see how accurate this is.

For information on the Barf-O-Meter development, see Seastate Barf-O-Meter Index v.2.2.

Comments:

Ya mon, the Barf-O-Meter's good to go. Just eyeballing it, the wind speed on Monday will be 20 kt. and the wave height 7ft. in the channels. On the Barf-O-Meter that would indeed be:

Barf Threat Level 3 (Code Orange)
Rising Puking -
Somewhat Likely Seasickness
[This is one level below Likely Seasickness, so most people will probably be OK with it on Monday, although there might be some who get seasick.]

Here is the NOAA info. from http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/CWF.php:

KAIWI CHANNEL-
921 AM HST SAT APR 5 2008

MONDAY:
East winds 20 kt. Wind waves 7 ft. Northwest swell 5 ft decreasing to 4 ft in the afternoon. Isolated showers.

TUESDAY:
East winds 20 kt. Wind waves 6 ft. Scattered showers.

WEDNESDAY:
East winds 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 6 to 8 ft. Scattered showers.
----------------------------------
PAILOLO CHANNEL [THAT IS THE UNPREDICTABLY CRAZY CHANNEL]-
921 AM HST SAT APR 5 2008

MONDAY:
Northeast winds 20 kt. Wind waves 7 ft. Isolated showers.

TUESDAY:
East winds 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 6 to 7 ft. Scattered showers.

WEDNESDAY:
East winds to 25 kt. Wind waves 6 to 8 ft. Scattered showers.

Happy sailing,
Aloha, Brad
