Drug testing of Hawaii teachers--why in the world did they agree to it?
I really don't understand... despite the newspaper coverage... why a union would agree to having its members tested forever without suspicion, and without a demonstrated systemic problem. Maybe when they've peed in the cup a few times they'll think differently about it.
If you're wondering about that or about any aspect of drug testing public workers (or anyone, for that matter), tune in tomorrow (Thursday) to Town Square, hosted by Beth-Ann Kozlovich, on Hawaii Public Radio, for a discussion of the issue. 5-6 p.m. on KIPO, 89.3 FM or streaming from hawaiipublicradio.org . It's also someplace on the digital cable TV system if you prefer to listen that way.
The HSTA declined to participate in the program but you can hear discussion by the ACLU and the Drug Policy Forum of Hawaii.
It's a call-in program, and the website also takes comments before or after the program.
Why would teachers agree to drug testing in the first place.
If you live in Hawaii or heard about Hawaii's cost of living, this may give you a better idea of why I did vote YES on the pay raise and yes to drug testing. It was pretty much because I felt blackmailed and really truly needed the money. I have been swamped with debt ever since I moved out here. I normally live paycheck to paycheck which is fine when you're in your twenties, but when you start to hit middle age, it becomes harder and harder to deal with. Furthermore this pay raise has really not even helped me, with rent rises and the cost of gasoline and electric going sky high, it seems like I take a pay cut every year.
