Tying up a loose end: Crimes against visitors down
by Larry Geller
Well, credit it to poor timing if you like, in addition to poor judgement. No sooner does the Honolulu Weekly devote a cover to a sensational crime statistic revelation than the Advertiser prints a front-page story, Crimes targeting Oahu visitors drop by 40%. If correct, crime against visitors are certainly reduced at present (I'm not sure what I think of using cameras all over town to accomplish this, though).
Of course, many visitors will have seen the Weekly cover with the smoking gun and scare headline and not the Advertiser story. Whatever damage is done is done.
The point is not that we don't have crime or that visitors shouldn't be warned. But let's be realistic about it.
